Dr. Martin Olivares
Clinical Supervisor / Consultant
Dr. Olivares is a psychoanalyst and a bilingual/bicultural psychotherapist. Dr. Olivares’s professional career is divided between teaching, private practice, supervision, and consulting. Dr. Olivares’s clinical
work, supervision, consulting, and teaching are dynamically and culturally informed. Dr. Olivares considers that the patient’s emotional issues correspond to the patient’s unconscious motives and
conflicts resulting from early experiences with caregivers. I use transference as the space where the patient’s early relationships become enacted. I also use techniques to identify the impact of these early
relationships and conflicts to develop insight into the patient’s current issues and the defensive structures built to protect one from psychic pain. This approach allows for understanding symptoms, defenses, anxieties, and fears that lay deep in the unconscious, which helps develop the capacity to make structural changes and promote psychological growth.
